Best Surfer SEO Alternatives (2026): 10 Tools Priced With AI Search Tracking

NeuronWriter is the cheapest Surfer SEO alternative with a similar content editor: $23 a month, or about $45 with 25 AI search questions tracked. Frase is the best value with AI tracking bundled, at $49. Scalenut is cheapest if you prepay a year on its current offer. Rankability tracks the most AI engines.

Surfer is still the best-known content optimizer: you paste a draft, it scores it against the pages that rank, and tells you which terms and headings to add. In 2026 it also tracks how your brand shows up in ChatGPT and other AI answers. The question most people searching for an alternative are really asking is simpler. Can I get the same job done for less?

To answer that you have to read Surfer’s pricing correctly, and several of the pages that rank for this search do not. They also skip the cost that now matters most: AI search tracking, which some tools bundle and others sell as a separate add-on. This guide prices both, for three content volumes, from each vendor’s own pricing page.

How we put this together. We have not used these tools ourselves; this is a research-based comparison. Every price and allowance below comes from the vendor’s own pricing page, read on 13 October 2026 with the billing toggles and sliders moved by hand. Pages were viewed from India and every price was shown in dollars; where a page shows “$” with no currency code, we report it as listed. The cost totals are our own arithmetic. Nothing here is a test result.

What Surfer really costs in 2026

Surfer’s pricing page now lists four self-serve plans, a tracking-only plan and Enterprise. The headline document counts are easy to misread.

Surfer planAnnual billing, per monthMonthly billingDocumentsAI prompts tracked
Discovery$49$59120 a year on annual; 10 a month on monthlyNone
Standard$99$118360 a year on annual; 30 a month on monthly25, refreshed weekly, ChatGPT only
Pro$182$217360 a year; 30 a month50, daily, several engines
Peace of Mind$299$355Unlimited, under a fair usage policy100, daily
AI Search Analytics$82$94None, tracking only50, daily

The trap: the 120 and 360 documents on annual plans are yearly pools, not monthly allowances. Switch the toggle to monthly and the cards change to 10 and 30 documents a month, and Surfer’s FAQ says annual credits reset yearly. One ranking page lists Discovery as $49 a month for 120 documents, which reads the yearly pool as a monthly one and makes Surfer look twelve times more generous than it is. The real figures are about 10 documents a month on Discovery and 30 on Standard and Pro.

Two more details shape the comparisons below. Discovery tracks no AI prompts at all, and Standard’s 25 prompts are refreshed weekly and cover ChatGPT only. Among the editor plans, daily tracking across several AI engines starts at Pro, $217 a month on monthly billing. The page lists no price for extra documents.

What you pay for an editor plus AI tracking

This is the comparison none of the ranking pages makes. We priced the cheapest self-serve setup on each tool for three content teams.

Our assumptions: monthly billing at list prices on 13 October 2026; one article means one optimization or analysis, whatever the tool calls it; tracking needs grow with output, so 10 articles with 25 AI prompts, 30 articles with 50 prompts, and 100 articles with 100 prompts. Where a tool sells tracking separately, we add the two prices together. AI engines and refresh rates differ, so this compares cost, not quality.

How we got these numbers

  • Surfer: at 10 articles, Discovery has no tracking, and Discovery plus the $94 tracking plan would cost $153, so Standard at $118 is cheaper. At 30 articles, Standard plus the tracking plan would come to $212, $5 under Pro, but the page does not say the two can be combined on one account, so we priced Pro.
  • NeuronWriter: its AI tracking add-on is a slider. A page scraper reads it as $0; moved by hand it showed 10 questions for $9, 25 for $22, 50 for $43, 100 for $83 and up to 1,000 for $769 a month. Our totals price the full prompt count through the add-on, because the page does not say whether the few questions included with each plan count toward it.
  • Frase: at 100 articles, Professional plus 60 extra articles at $5 would be $429, so Scale at $299 is cheaper.
  • Scalenut: the offer prices apply only on annual billing and are paid upfront: $36 a month is $432 a year, and $80 is $960. Under the offer, Professional allows 150 optimizations a month, which covers the 100-article team.
  • SE Ranking: its AI Search Toolkit is listed at $89 a month and $71.20 on annual billing; we read these as the monthly and annual prices of the entry 200-prompt tier, which the page does not label. The page does not state the pack size for extra articles.
  • Semrush: the Content Toolkit card lists both “10,000 articles” and “5 SEO content boosts” a month, so it is not clear how many optimizations it covers; the Semrush totals assume it covers the article count.
  • Clearscope: the page lists extra drafts but does not say whether the price is per pack or per draft, so we did not total it.

What the table tells you

At 10 articles a month, NeuronWriter with real AI tracking costs $45, 38% of Surfer Standard on monthly billing, and Frase costs $49. At 30 articles, NeuronWriter’s $88 is 59% less than Surfer Pro. At 100 articles, it is about half of Peace of Mind. If you are willing to prepay a year, Scalenut’s current offer is the cheapest of all. And NeuronWriter’s $23 headline is not the price of AI tracking: adding 25 questions nearly doubles it.

The 10 alternatives

1. NeuronWriter: the cheapest Surfer-style editor

NeuronWriter’s plans run from Bronze at $23 a month ($19 on yearly billing) for 25 content analyses and 2 projects, up to Diamond at $117 for 150 analyses. The editor works like Surfer’s: a score against ranking pages, with terms and questions to cover. Each plan includes a handful of AI-monitored questions, 5 on Bronze, and the paid add-on covers Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Its AI visibility page says answers are rechecked every 24 to 48 hours. The pricing page does not say next to the number whether analyses are monthly; the monthly price layout implies they are.

Best for: solo writers and small teams who want Surfer’s core editor at a fraction of the price.

2. Frase: the most AI tracking per dollar

Frase’s pricing, in US dollars, starts at Starter for $49 a month ($39 yearly): 10 articles, 25 AI generations and 50 AI visibility prompts across ChatGPT and Google AI. Professional at $129 gives 40 articles and 200 prompts and adds Perplexity; Scale at $299 gives 100 articles and 500 prompts and adds Claude and Gemini. Professional and Scale can opt into overage at $5 and $4 per extra article. Extra seats are $29 a month.

Best for: anyone who wants optimization and AI tracking in one bill with no add-ons.

3. Scalenut: cheapest if you prepay a year

Scalenut’s pricing page lists Starter at $59, Plus at $89 and Professional at $199 a month on monthly billing. On annual billing it was showing a “60% OFF Limited Offer” with doubled limits when we checked: $24, $36 and $80 a month. Plus tracks 25 prompts weekly on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews; Professional tracks 100 and adds Perplexity. Scalenut also sells a separate AI Visibility product, from $1 a month pay as you go or $49 a month for Growth, whose plan list says daily updates while its FAQ says weekly by default.

Best for: teams ready to commit a year while the offer runs.

4. Rankability: the widest AI engine coverage

Rankability starts at $97 a month for 20 content projects, 100 AI queries tracked daily and unlimited seats, with Agency at $297 and Agency Pro at $497. Its tracking covers 11 AI platforms, including ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok, Copilot and DeepSeek. A content project bundles research, brief, outline, draft and optimization. Annual billing saves two months.

Best for: agencies that report AI visibility to clients across many engines.

5. Clearscope: simple editor, unlimited seats

Clearscope’s Essentials plan is $129 a month for 20 drafts, 20 topic explorations, 50 tracked pages and 50 tracked queries on ChatGPT and Gemini, with unlimited seats. Business is $399 for 300 tracked queries. It offers a 14-day free trial; no annual price is shown.

Best for: editorial teams with many writers and a modest volume of articles.

6. SE Ranking: if you already track rankings there

SE Ranking’s Core plan at $129 a month includes 25 content marketing articles, and Growth at $279 includes 50. AI search tracking is a separate AI Search Toolkit, listed at $89 a month, covering AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT. One competing guide still lists SE Ranking at $65, which is out of date.

Best for: existing SE Ranking users who want content tools without another login.

7. Semrush: if you are already on Semrush

The Content Toolkit is listed at $60 a month. AI tracking is a separate AI Visibility Toolkit at $99 a month per domain for 25 prompts tracked daily across ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity, or comes inside the SEO plans from $199 a month with 50 prompts. Stacking the two toolkits costs $159 a month at 10 articles, more than Surfer Standard.

Best for: teams who already pay for Semrush SEO.

8. Writesonic: AI drafts plus tracking

Writesonic’s Starter plan is $79 a month billed annually and works out to $99 on monthly billing, for 15 AI articles and 50 prompts tracked daily on ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews. Its articles are AI-written drafts rather than an optimizer score. Its own help docs still describe older plans, and one competing guide lists it at $49, which is out of date. See our Writesonic review.

Best for: people who want drafts written for them and AI visibility in one bill.

9. MarketMuse: topic strategy, no public price

MarketMuse lists no prices; every paid plan is “Book a demo”. A free plan gives 10 queries a month, and the Optimize plan lists 100 tracked topics and 5 content briefs a month. No AI visibility tracking is mentioned on its pricing page.

Best for: larger content teams planning topic coverage across a whole site.

10. Koala: a writer, not an optimizer

Koala starts at $25 a month for 45,000 words, and Professional at $49 adds an article editor with an SEO score. Premium AI models count two or three times against the word allowance. It has no AI visibility tracking on its pricing page, which is why it is not in the cost table.

Best for: bulk first drafts that you will optimize elsewhere.

Does annual billing change the answer?

Partly. On annual billing Surfer drops to $99 a month for Standard, $182 for Pro and $299 for Peace of Mind, but the 360 documents on Standard and Pro become one pool for the whole year. A team publishing 30 articles a month uses all of it, with nothing spare for refreshing older posts. The alternatives get cheaper on annual billing too: NeuronWriter Bronze falls to $19, Frase Starter to $39, Clearscope shows no annual price, and Rankability Starter works out to about $80.83 a month at $970 a year. On our arithmetic, annual billing narrows the gap with Surfer but does not close it at any of the three volumes.

Annual billing per month on 13 October 2026: Surfer Standard $99 with 360 documents as one yearly pool, NeuronWriter Bronze $19, Frase Starter $39, Scalenut Plus $36 on its annual offer, Rankability Starter $80.83

When staying on Surfer makes sense

Switching has a cost of its own: new scores to learn, briefs to rebuild and a team to retrain. Surfer is still worth keeping if you publish at the Peace of Mind volume, where its unlimited documents remove the counting altogether, or if your writers already work inside its editor every day and you track AI visibility on a separate tool anyway. If none of those apply, the table above suggests you are paying for brand familiarity.

What to check before you switch

  • Read the document count on monthly billing. Annual pools look generous on the pricing card and run out fast if you publish every week.
  • Check which AI engines are tracked, and how often. A weekly ChatGPT-only check is not the same as daily tracking across five engines, even if the prompt count matches.
  • Look for the add-on. NeuronWriter, SE Ranking and Semrush sell AI tracking separately, and their headline prices do not include it.
  • Check overage. Frase lets you buy extra articles on its higher plans; Surfer lists no price for extra documents.
  • Export your briefs and drafts. Before cancelling Surfer, save the documents you still use; content scores do not travel between tools.
  • Compare the score, not just the price. Each tool builds its score from its own reading of the ranking pages, so expect a draft that scores 80 in one tool to score differently in another.

Black Friday on SEO content tools

Scalenut is already running one: its homepage showed a “Black Friday Early Access” banner on 13 October 2026, and its annual plans carried the 60% offer with doubled limits. The banner says three times the limits while the pricing cards show double, and an old Black Friday 2024 FAQ is still on the page, so go by the plan cards. Surfer and NeuronWriter showed no 2026 offer on their own pages that day; Surfer’s 2025 annual-plan discount was reported by third-party deal sites, and NeuronWriter’s appeared on its own promo page, since removed. We list each offer once we can confirm it on the vendor’s own site, on our AI tools Black Friday deals page.
